A couple of times, people have asked me how I “come up with these outfits.” I also get a lot of, “but that would look cute on you not me.” When I get these comments, I proceed to explain to said person that the best way to come up with great outfits is to know your body type and to dress for it. This area of styling is called “body type styling.” In order to style your outfits for your body type, you have to be completely honest with yourself and your physique, what would look good on it and what wouldn’t. I’ll give you a few examples using my body type.
Just like we ensure that the make up we put on works well with our natural facial features, we should ensure that the clothes we wear work well with our physique. Doing this helps us boost our confidence in our bodies, which, in turn, helps us improve our personal style.
- I have quite broad shoulders. Because of this, I can pull off button down shirts that drape off my shoulders nicely. For example, I can only pull off this white oversized shirt in the outfit above because is drapes of my broad shoulders nicely. Otherwise, the shirt would look too big on me.
- I NEVER wear bodycon dresses because they do not look good on me. Simple. Because my shoulders are broad and I do not have big enough hips, I end up looking straight in bodycon dresses. This is the honest truth. It’s the main reason why I opt for shift dresses instead (see picture below). However, bottoms (pants, skirts, shorts) or dresses that are cinched at the waist look great on my. This is because the cinched waist balances out my broad shoulder (like in the denim skirt below).
- I have a short torso and a high waistline. This means that high-waisted pants look good on me because they sit well on my high waist (like in the picture below). They also elongate my legs. Pants that aren’t high waisted are not my favourite because they cut me off at the wrong place and make my outfits look sloppy.
These are just a few things that I take into consideration when dressing for my body type. I think these tips make it clear that it is important to dress for your God-given body. Just like we ensure that the make up we put on works well with our natural facial features, we should ensure that the clothes we wear work well with our physique. Doing this helps us boost our confidence in our bodies, which, in turn, helps us improve our personal style. There will be a “5 Tips” second part to this post, where I will share some other general body styling tips for other body types. Stay tuned.
