Hat Lover

If I were to pick a favourite accessory, I would pick a hat. This is interesting because I never used to be a hat person until I got a job at a hat store a few years ago. I was surrounded by hats of all shapes and styles and aesthetics everyday. I quickly became obsessed. And now, I am of the opinion that hats bring a touch of confidence to your outfit in a way that no other fashion accessory can.

People usually look at me funny when I wear hats and most of the time I am not sure if the looks are out of admiration or horror. But I usually convince myself that the latter is not the case. Even if it were, I could not care less.

Since then, I have learned that a lot of people love to see hats on other people but would never try them on because they think they would look silly. This is completely understandable. Even I shared the same sentiments before I became a hat lover.  Most people think wearing a hat is going to make them look like Charlie Chaplin or the guy from Breaking Bad. Because a lot of people associate hats with movie/theatrical figures, they assume hats are costumes but they really are not. There are ways to incorporate your love for hats into your everyday outfits without looking like you are supposed to be on a stage or “like you are trying too hard.”

I also quickly learned that everyone has that one style of hat that suits them (the shape of their face) and their style. The chances of finding the hat that suits YOU depends on two things: patience and your level of confidence.

I am of the opinion that hats bring a touch of confidence to your outfit in a way that no other fashion accessory can.

I say patience because you might walk into a hat store and spend over 30 minutes trying on all the hats, to no avail. I have seen this happen before. When this happens, most people give up saying “meh, I am not a hat person anyway” or  “my brother or my daughter looks way better in hats than I do” and with that, they completely lose interest in hats.

If you have always wanted to try hats but are too self conscious, go out there, be patient in finding a hat that suits you and your style. It’s the easiest way to say “this is MY style and I am confident in it.”

Confidence comes in handy because you will get the looks from people when you wear a hat. Especially when you spot an unconventional hat like a porkpie or really wide brimmed Fedora (as opposed to a baseball cap or a regular beach Fedora). People usually look at me funny when I wear hats and most of the time I am not sure if the looks are out of admiration or horror. But I often convince myself that the latter is not the case. Even if it were, I could not care less.

Basically, what I am saying is: If you have always wanted to try hats but are too self conscious, go out there, be patient in finding a hat that suits you and your style. It’s the easiest way to say “this is MY style and I am confident in it.”
